Our History
Caring for you – over 40 years.

Over 40 years ago, our funeral home was founded by Leonard Smith. Mr. Smith felt he was called to the funeral profession because he had a true heart for helping families who had suffered a loss. When he established Smith Mortuary, Mr. Smith already had extensive experience in working with families in grief. He had been a funeral director with the well-respected McCammon-Ammons Funeral Home in Blount County.

Because Mr. Smith’s sympathy and compassion were a comfort to families who trusted him with their funeral arrangements, the company grew through the years. Mr. Don Gibson joined the firm in 1968 and Mr. Ralph Chambers joined in 1969. Grandview Cemetery was then acquired in 1975, by Mr. Smith, Mr. Gibson, and Mr. Chambers, allowing families to make all their funeral and interment arrangements in one place, with one company. Mr. Chamber’s son, Lee Chambers, joined the organization in 1976. Since 1993, Smith Mortuary has added more services and more facilities for the convenience of families: a flower shop, children’s playroom, and resource library just to name a few. In 2003, the Life Event Center was added, which is available to the community for meetings, meals, and celebrations of life.

Leonard Smith died in 1991, but he entrusted his legacy of compassion and respect to the families of the partners who joined him over the years. Today, the firm is still owned and operated by local families, and managed by Don Gibson, Lee Chambers, Jason Chambers, Lisa Gibson, C. Lynn Gibson, and Justin Chambers.
